History

Released Time Bible Education (RTBE) has a rich history dating back to 1914. It began with the belief that a child’s education encompasses more than academics and that religious instruction plays a vital role. Since then, RTBE programs have flourished across the country, providing countless students with the opportunity to explore their faith. The idea to implement a Released Time Bible Education program in the South Bay began in June, 2021.  Released Time Bible Education South Bay (RTBE South Bay) became a local RTBE program October, 2023.  RTBE South Bay serves the region of the Los Angeles metropolitan area located in the southwest corner of Los Angeles County.

Purpose

Our purpose is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for public school students to learn about the Bible and develop a relationship with Jesus Christ. With parental permission, students can attend weekly off-campus classes led by passionate volunteers.

Legal Framework | Released Time Bible Education

Legal Framework

RTBE programs operate within the legal boundaries established by the Released Time Religious Education Law (California Education Code section 46014). This law grants local school boards the authority to release students for religious instruction during designated school hours.

Description of Classes

Classes are typically held off-campus for a duration of up to 50 minutes per week. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, fostering open discussions and exploration of biblical themes. Classes are tailored to different age groups, ensuring age-appropriate learning and engagement.

Curriculum

The curriculum focuses on foundational teachings of the Bible, exploring stories, principles, and values that guide Christian life. Lessons are designed to be interactive and engaging, incorporating activities, discussions, and age-appropriate materials.

Our Teachers

All RTBE teachers are dedicated volunteers who undergo a training process to ensure they are well-equipped to lead engaging and informative classes. More importantly, they are committed followers of Jesus Christ with a passion for sharing their faith and nurturing the hearts and minds of children. All volunteers working directly with the children undergo a background check by the Department of Justice of the State of California.

Our Core Beliefs

Released Time Bible Education is built upon the following core beliefs:

  • The Christian faith: We believe in the Holy Trinity – Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit. We believe humanity was created in God’s image but fell into sin. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ.
  • The Scriptures: We hold the Bible (Old and New Testament) as God’s inspired word, the ultimate authority for our faith and life.
  • The Church: We believe in the universal Church as the body of Christ and the importance of local congregations. We are called to share the Gospel, make disciples, and serve others.
  • Marriage, Gender, and Sexuality: We believe God creates humans as male or female, reflecting His image. Marriage is a sacred union between one man and one woman. Sexual intimacy is reserved for marriage.
  • Conflict Resolution: We believe in seeking reconciliation and resolving disputes through Christian mediation.

Biblical Authority

This statement does not encompass all our beliefs. The Bible is the final authority on truth, morality, and human conduct. Our Board of Directors holds the final interpretive authority on the Bible’s meaning and application for Released Time Bible Education.

We offer compassion and respect to all, but expect volunteers to uphold this Statement of Faith.
